DAILY SCHEDULE (schedule subject to change)
Hours of Operation 7:30 AM-6:00 PM
Program Hours 8:30 AM-4:00 PM
Extended Hours 7:30-8:30 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM
7:30-9:00 Greeting/Open Classroom Activities
Children and families are greeted upon entry. Self-directed centers of interest are set up to allow children to independently choose activities that help them separate and adjust to the beginning of the day. Free play provides opportunities for learning and social interaction.
9:00-9:30 Housekeeping and Morning Meeting
Individually and/or in pairs children work together to straighten up the classroom and return it to its original state. Children learn how to plan, organize and work with others. During the Morning Meeting, children gather to listen to the teacher introduce the day’s activities, special events, introduce guests, share observations, announce changes, and develop group awareness. This is a more structured setting where children are asked to practice self-regulation, increase attention span, and develop listening skills.
9:30-10:30 Morning Work Time
Children engage in self-directed activities individually and in small groups. Projects built around the children’s interests will develop during this time. Projects and individual work may occur in any of the various centers which include: Art Studio, Blocks, Dramatic Play, Sand and Water, Music and Movement, Reading and Literacy, Science and Collections, and Math and Manipulative. A healthy snack will also be available giving children many opportunities to socialize, converse and make choices.
Small Group Activity Time
During, Morning Work Time, a small group of children may meet with a teacher to experiment with materials, solve problems, and try out new skills. Teachers develop a small-group activity based on children’s interests and particular skills. Though the teacher plans the activity and sets it in motion, children make choices about how to use the materials and freely communicate their ideas.
10:30-11:30 Outside/Large Motor/Movement Activities
Time for exercise. Children and adults enjoy vigorous play in the fresh air either in our backyard or at nearby parks. Walks to places such as Alta Plaza Park, Alta Plaza Playground, and the Pacific Heights Neighborhood will be part of our outdoor experience. Climbing, running, and jumping help children develop large muscle control, motor coordination, and balance.
11:30-11:45 Reflection and Sharing Meeting
Children come together to reflect on the day’s choices, give reports from small group work, and share individual work completed in the classroom. Children gain an appreciation for collaboration with their peers and develop confidence in their abilities and ideas.
11:45-12:25 Lunch Preparation and Lunch
Children wash hands and bring lunch boxes to the table to set out their lunches. Performing sequencing tasks, developing autonomy, and building self-esteem are all part of the process of setting up lunch. Children also learn social and practical skills: carrying a conversation with classmates and teachers and practicing table manners.
12:25-12:45 Naptime Preparation/Rest Time Stories/12:30 Dismissal
Children use the bathroom and then join in a pre-rest story time. Children who have a 12:30 dismissal time will be excused at this time. After stories, children go quietly to their mats for a rest.
12:30-2:30 Rest/Quiet Activities
Children rest quietly on cots listening to soft music and stories. Teachers engage in quiet time activities with children requiring less restime.
1:30-2:30 Outside/Inside Free Choice/Skill Classes
After rest, depending on the activity choices of the day, children may use the outside play area or may continue work in the classroom centers. Another choice may be a Skills Class where children can engage in an enjoyable and time-honored activity such as Weaving, Ceramics, Cooking, Photography, Woodworking, Flower Arranging, Gardening, or Sewing.
2:30-3:00 Housekeeping/Wash Hands/Group Snack
After straightening up the classroom and washing hands, it’s time to refuel. All the children will come together at the tables to eat a healthy snack. Learning occurs during all the activities of snack time: preparation of the tables and food, social conversation, an understanding of nutrition, and clean-up.
3:00-3:45 Afternoon Work Time
A continuation of the Morning Work Time with additional work on projects and independent and small group play.
3:45-4:10 Transition Meeting/4:00 Dismissal/Stories/Songs
At the last meeting of the day we prepare the 4:00 p.m. children for their departure and re-focus the remaining children on the continuing classroom schedule.
4:10-4:45 Outside/Movement/Skills Classes
Another period of large motor development and outdoor fun. Additional Skills Classes during this period may include Yoga, Dance, or Gymnastics.
4:45-5:30 Open Classroom Activities
Similar to the morning, children independently choose activities that help them to prepare for the end of their day. This could include finishing art projects, writing letters, organizing and collecting their projects to bring home and share with their families.
5:30-6:00 Stories/Music/Table Activities/Final Dismissal
Quiet, supportive, small group time with a teacher to end the child’s day.
